Our Story

We Couldn't Find the Answers. So We Built Them.

Clarity for College started with a simple frustration: we couldn't find honest, data-driven answers about college.

We come from software and data backgrounds. We know how to find information, model it, and pressure-test it. Yet when it came to college — arguably one of the biggest financial and life decisions a family makes — everything we found felt incomplete, biased, or promotional.

  • Where was the clear breakdown of the real benefits of going to college?
  • To this college versus that one?
  • Who actually earns more — and why?
  • Do "super schools" really change long-term outcomes?
  • What truly drives admissions decisions?
  • How much do colleges care about outcomes after graduation?
  • Is the value of networks real — or just mythology?

So we did what researchers do. We gathered the data. Then more data. Then research layered on top of data. Academic studies. Government datasets. Institutional disclosures. Outcome reports. Admissions trends.

Over four years, we built what became one of the most comprehensive college data repositories we could find — structured, modeled, and analyzed the way you would evaluate an investment.

Because that's what this is.

Why We Built This

We Weren't Theorizing. Our Own Kids Were Applying.

They ran the full spectrum:

4.0+ GPAs, 10 APs, 36 ACT
Strong but not elite: 3.7–3.8 students
"Big sports/party school" aspirers
Athletes balancing sports and academics
Families earning $250K
Families earning $400K

Different profiles. Same question:

Where is the unbiased resource that helps rational, data-oriented families feel confident about spending $300,000?

The Frustration

Marketing Everywhere. Answers Nowhere.

Every brochure from Minnesota and Montana schools showed sunny campuses and no snow. Every ranking had an angle and an ad for a for-profit school. The emails were relentlessly promotional.

And it all felt so aspirational — as if the upside were automatic (which is impossible).

As consumers, we couldn't find what we needed.

So we built it.

What We Did

We Modeled College Like Financial Assets.

We evaluated outcomes, risk, selectivity drivers, cost structures, and opportunity costs. We made our own decisions — and shared the analysis with friends.

They found it useful.

So here it is.

Straight data.
Clear modeling.
Research-backed insights.
No hype.

Use It to Make Your Own Call.

It doesn't tell you what to do. The data is here. The analysis is clear.
The decision is yours.
