Clarity for College started with a simple frustration: we couldn't find honest, data-driven answers about college.
We come from software and data backgrounds. We know how to find information, model it, and pressure-test it. Yet when it came to college — arguably one of the biggest financial and life decisions a family makes — everything we found felt incomplete, biased, or promotional.
So we did what researchers do. We gathered the data. Then more data. Then research layered on top of data. Academic studies. Government datasets. Institutional disclosures. Outcome reports. Admissions trends.
Over four years, we built what became one of the most comprehensive college data repositories we could find — structured, modeled, and analyzed the way you would evaluate an investment.

The Frustration
Every brochure from Minnesota and Montana schools showed sunny campuses and no snow. Every ranking had an angle and an ad for a for-profit school. The emails were relentlessly promotional.
And it all felt so aspirational — as if the upside were automatic (which is impossible).
As consumers, we couldn't find what we needed.
So we built it.
What We Did
We evaluated outcomes, risk, selectivity drivers, cost structures, and opportunity costs. We made our own decisions — and shared the analysis with friends.
